FOTD? Can't figure it out

I really want to start doing step by step makeup tutorial or Face of the Day on my blog, but i'm not happy with all the pictures that I have been taken. For your information i borrow my sister's Canon D50 to do it. Is it the setting (i'm not really good at photography)?, is it the lighthing? can't figure it out.

Do you have any recommendation about taking makeup tutorial photo? what camera do you recommend? please help me :(
